Madrasah student killed, 25 hurt in Jessore clash

JESSORE, Apr 3 (UNB): A madrasah student was shot dead allegedly by the cops, and 25 others including policemen and journalists were injured in a clash between police and supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam organisation in the town Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ahmed Husain (19), a student of Madani Nagar Madrasah and son of Ismail of Chakla Kathaltala area in Monirampur Upazila.
Police and eyewitnesses said, a procession was brought out in the town under the banner of Hefazat-e-Islam at about 11:30 am in support of Monday's countrywide hartal.
When the procession reached Zila School crossing at Mujib Road, policemen intercepted them as they did not take prior permission to bring out procession.
A chase and counter chase took place in the area, when the police tried to disperse them.
Being halted by the police, the protesters with sticks in hand threw brickbats to the police and tried to make their way.
Later the police lobbed tear gas shells and fired 70/75 shotgun bullets in the air.
Husain, who received bullet wounds, was admitted to the sadar hospital and died there at about 12 noon.
The injured policemen were rushed to the hospital.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali thana, Emdad Hossain said, to maintain law and order they intercepted the procession. He claimed that the protesters also fired gunshots.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Nurul Amin, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamrul Ahsan and other high officials went to the hospital to visit the deceased and injured persons.
