Maleque calls for quality health services

FE REPORT | April 08, 2021 00:00:00

Health minister Zahid Maleque on Wednesday said the standard of health services should be equal, and food and water be contamination-free and safe.

He also called upon the World Health Organisation to distribute vaccine equally to build a fairer world.

Describing the development in the health sector, Mr Maleque said the quality of health services must be improved.

"A number of hospitals have been built in Bangladesh, including 100 medical colleges and five medical universities with 0.15-million beds."

"But the quality of health should be increased. There is a shortage of health workforce in the health sector which should be increased too," he went on to say.

The minister was addressing an online discussion marking World Health Day-2021 hosted by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

DGHS director general Prof ABM Khurshid Alam, health secretaries and DGHS additional DG (planning) were also present virtually.

Mr Maleque said the institutional delivery capacity should be increased.

"We've increased the Covid test number to 35,000 daily which was 150 earlier. The number of Covid-dedicated beds and ICUs have also been raised," he mentioned.

"Still the Covid pandemic situation is beyond our control," the minister added.

He said the situation made impossible the treatment of non-Covid patients.

If the country wants to get rid of this situation, Mr Maleque said, the 18-point instruction must be followed.
