FE REPORT | September 16, 2022 00:00:00

Several people were injured in a clash between activists of Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and the ruling Awami League in Mirpur over holding a scheduled rally of the BNP.

The chase and counter- chase between them triggered a wave of panic in and around the Mukul Fouz field at Mirpur Section No-6 where the rally was supposed to be held in protest against the increase in prices of essentials, fuel and transport fares.

Police lobbed tear gas shells to take the violent situation under control.

BNP leaders and activists blamed ruling party activists and police for foiling their protest rally.

Talking to the reporters, convener of BNP's Dhaka Metropolitan (North) Aman Ullah Aman said activists of the Awami League attacked on them when their activists and supporters were moving to join their scheduled rally in Mukul Fouz Field.

Soon after their supporters resisted the ruling party's attack, police suddenly joined with the AL men and attacked on them again, he said.

"Many of our activists got hurt in the attack although we took approval for holding the rally," he added.

But police turned down the allegation of the BNP leaders, saying that they come to the scene to take the situation under control.

Deputy commissioner of DMP's Mirpur Zone Jasim Uddin Mollah told the reporters that a AL rally was passing close to the venue where BNP was holding rally.

Suddenly, some people from the BNP rally launched attack on the passing rally. To avoid any unexpected event, police come to the scene and pulled away the people attending in the AL procession, he said.

At the time, police member were attacked by the BNP activists and it prompted the law enforcers to act strictly to maintain peace there.

He also claimed that some of their member got injured in the clash.

Earlier on September 10, BNP announced to hold public rallies in 16 spots under its Dhaka south and north city units until September 27 in protest against the increase in prices of essentials, fuel and transport fares.

The rallies are also meant for registering the party's protest against the killings of Bhola Chhatra Dal leader Noor-e-Alam, Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim and Narayanganj Jubo Dal leader Shaon Prodhan.
