Matin seeks int'l help to build cyclone shelters

BARISAL, Dec 1 (UNB): Communications Adviser MA Matin appealed to the United Nations and other international agencies for immediate help in constructing cyclone shelters.
Matin, who is also coordinator for relief and rehabilitation work for the Sidr victims, made the appeal to UN Assistant Secretary General Jane Holl Lute who visited some of the affected areas. The Adviser informed the UN official that protection of dams and embankments is essential to avoid loss of lives and property during storms and tidal waves.
He also called for assistance in developing sustainable prevention against the damages of natural calamities by implementing long-term projects.
Brigadier General Rashiduzaman briefed the UN official about the devastation and relief operations.
