Crash programme soon to fight mosquito menace

Newly-elected Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Saturday unveiled his work plan for the next one year focusing on 10 areas of development.
Dividing the plans into three phases - short, medium and long-term - the DNCC mayor emphasised preventing environmental pollution, making the city green while digitising city services.
Mr Islam came up with his to-do list at a press conference organised at Bangladesh Club in the city's Uttara.
Referring to his many plans to make the city "polished and dazzling", the mayor-elect said, "I have divided my targets into three terms - short, medium and long."
In the next one year, the mayor's priority would be to light up the urban spaces, prevent environmental pollution, make the 'NOGOR' app Dhaka north functional, digitise taxation and other transactions system and make the sidewalks usable for city dwellers.
Promoting road safety and bringing discipline in the transport sector are also on Mr Islam's list.
He would also take up a wide-ranging development plans for 18 new wards of the DNCC.
Making Dhaka green is one of his top priorities, which will be executed through tree plantation, urban forestry and by encouraging urban agriculture.
He also said open parks and play grounds will be created in different areas and all-out effort will be given to execute the plans of late mayor Annisul Huq.
Talking to the reporters, Mr Islam said, "Victory in the election is not just mine but also the city dwellers; our destination is same and it is to make Dhaka city modern and functioning."
Seeking cooperation from city dwellers, government officials, law enforcement agencies, businesses and politicians, he said everyone has the responsibility to make Dhaka a city having all the modern amenities.
"If we all work responsibly from our respective positions, I solemnly believe that it is possible to make Dhaka a beautiful, functioning and modern," he added.
Talking about mosquito menace in the city, the mayor-elect said eliminating mosquito from the city does not come under the short, medium or long term plans, it has to be a continuous process and a crash programme will be taken soon to control the disturbance of mosquitoes.
He also requested the city dwellers not to litter the city with garbage and throw the wastes into designated spots to prevent waterlogging in the city during monsoon.
Dhaka North Awami League general secretary and member of parliament Sadek Khan was also present at the press conference.
