Members of Grameen Bank Sunday submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) seeking her intervention so that Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus could be reinstated in the bank.
The memorandum contained signatures of over 3.70 million members of the microfinance organisation. They requested the Prime Minister to cancel the central bank order against Prof Yunus for the greater interest of the beneficiaries of the bank.
Samman Rokkha Nagorik Committee -- a civil committee for protecting honour-- organised the meeting at the National Press Club on the day where lawyers, journalists, teachers, students and several members of the bank spoke.
They said Dr Yunus wanted to retire voluntarily several times from the Grameen Bank, but the board of directors of the bank requested him to continue further in the interest of the organisation.Convener of the body ABM Mustafa Amin moderated the meeting saying that the government should change its stand as it was criticised globally for the decision.
"We hope our honourable prime Minister will take immediate measure to bring an end to the misunderstanding as we believe her intervention can help resolve the problem," he added.
"We're trying to humiliate a person who has been fighting against poverty in the rural areas by ensuring women empowerment. It's very unfortunate for our nation," prominent journalist ABM Musa said adding that the whole nation should be proud of him.
On March 02, Bangladesh Bank ordered the removal of Yunus from the post of managing director of the Bank.
