Bangladesh Merchant Bankers Association (BMBA) submitted a 15-point proposal Thursday to the securities regulator for development of the capital market.
The newly-elected BMBA executive committee led by its president Tanjil Chowdhury submitted the proposal, when they met Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) chairman Professor M Khairul Hossain.
BSEC members Professor Helal Uddin Nizami, Md. Amzad Hossain, Arif Khan and A. Salam Sikder were also present on the occasion.
The BMBA proposed reduction of corporate tax on merchant banks and publication of annual and quarterly reports of mutual funds (MFs) and listed companies on their respective websites.
The merchant bankers said annual and quarterly reports should also be posted on the website of the securities regulator.
Another BMBA proposal was a hike in fee for managing issues by merchant banks. The BSEC welcomed the newly-elected committee of the BMBA.
According to the BMBA leaders, the BSEC chairman expressed his confidence that the new committee would work together in the greater interest of the market.
The chairman also emphasised the need for collective efforts and proper coordination of all stakeholders to establish a vibrant stock market. He assured the BMBA leaders of his full support.
"If the audit quality and corporate governance increase, the people's confidence in the capital market will increase. Both local and foreign investors will find it comfortable to put their money in the listed stocks," said a BMBA leader.
