Microcredit disbursement by NGOs marks 26.22pc rise

Disbursement of microcredit by the country's major non-governmental organisations (NGOs) marked a 26.22 per cent rise in 2006 calendar year over that of the previous year.
Nine key NGOs disbursed micro loans amounting to Tk 99.44 billion in 2006 while the amount was Tk 78.78 billion in 2005, the Bangladesh Economic Survey 2007 revealed.
Among the NGOs, the BRAC alone shared over 42 per cent of the total microcredit disbursement in 2006.
It provided microcredit to the tune of Tk 42.61 billion among 5.31 million beneficiaries in 2006 while the figures were Tk 32.54 billion and about 4.84 million respectively in 2005, the official survey showed.
The cumulative volume of microcredit disbursed by the BRAC had reached Tk 208.41 billion at the end of 2006, it mentioned.
Disbursement of microcredit by the ASA was recorded at about Tk 40 billion in 2006, reflecting a 20.58 per cent increase over the previous year's disbursement at Tk 33.18 billion.
The ASA's cumulative amount of credit disbursement crossed Tk 169.23 billion until December 31, 2006.
The number of ASA beneficiaries also increased to over 6.45 million in the last calendar year from nearly 5.99 million in 2005.
However, the PROSHIKA disbursed over Tk 3.16 billion as microcredit among its 15,030 beneficiaries in 2006 compared to Tk 2.88 billion among 20076 beneficiaries in 2005.
With the amount, its cumulative credit disbursement reached Tk 34.98 billion until December 2006.
On the other hand, the SSS disbursed microcredit amounting to nearly Tk 2.61 billion, Karitas Tk 1.18 billion, TMSS Tk 3.96 billion and Shakti Foundation disbursed nearly Tk 1.80 billion in 2006 while the figures were Tk 1.65 billion, Tk 1.06 billion, Tk 2.83 billion and Tk 1.50 billion respectively in 2005.
Disbursements of microcredit by the Bureau Tangail was recorded at Tk 3.18 billion and that of Swanirbhar Bangladesh was Tk 913.60 million in 2006 compared to Tk 2.37 billion and 759.10 million respectively in 2005.
Meanwhile, around 700 NGOs were running microcredit operation in Bangladesh until December 2005 with their beneficiaries totalling 26.40 million, the Economic Survey mentioned.
