Owners of the country's auto re-rolling and steel mills have expressed grave concern over 'frequent snatchings' of their vehicles carrying rods and 'stealing' of their money.
They voiced concern at an emergency meeting of Bangladesh Auto Re-Rolling and Steel Mills Association held at its office in the city on Monday.
"In recent times, two to three vehicles carrying rods are snatched a week and the money, collected from rod sales, is stolen," said a press release issued by the association.
Quoting the owners, the association further said they have been passing time with anxiety due to the recurrence of such incidents. They also apprehend that such frequent snatchings would cripple the industry.
They came up with the observations after a car driver of Ambient Steel (BD) Ltd Md Alauddin, 36, managed to flee with Tk 1,250,525 collected by company's sales representative Ali Akbar Munshi, 35.
Mr Munshi collected the money by selling rods to different shops, but the driver made a getaway with money when he (Munshi) went to a mosque to say prayers at Jatrabari in the city around 5:30 pm on Saturday.
In consultation with the company officials, Mr Munshi filed a complaint with the Jatrabari police station in connection with the incident on the day.
The emergency meeting demanded that the prime minister and the home minister take measures to arrest the person who was accused of stealing the money.
If anybody can know the whereabouts of the driver, he/she will be awarded with Tk 50,000, said the release, signed by Abul Kashem Majumder, secretary general of the association.
