A five-year-old child was burnt alive in a devastating fire that raged through a slum in the capital's Agargaon area on Wednesday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Sajib (5), son of Tuhin Sheikh, and they hailed from Gopalganj district. They used to reside at a shanty at Agargaon slum of the area.
Firefighters said the fire originated from a shanty at about 11:30 am and soon engulfed the whole slum gutting more than 100 shanties.
On information, twelve units of firemen rushed to the spot and doused the flame after nearly an hour-long frantic effort with the help of locals and law enforcers.
Additional Director (Operations) of Fire Service and Civil Defence Rafiqul Islam said they recovered the body of a child.
