Mirza Aziz off to Washington

Finance Adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam left Dhaka for Washington Wednesday to attend the three-day annual meeting of World Bank (WB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) beginning Saturday.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Salehuddin Ahmed will leave Dhaka today (Thursday) to join the meeting as a member of a Bangladesh team.
Finance adviser will also attend a high-level dialogue titled 'Financing for Development' in New York on October 23-25, official sources said.
Finance and development ministers from around the world this week will weigh up the robust development strategy set forth by the World Bank Group.
Delegations from 185 member nations will convene at the World Bank-International Monetary Fund Annual meetings in Washington.
The event's centerpiece is the joint Bank-IMF Development Committee meeting scheduled to be held on October 21 to discuss the WB's programmes to end poverty worldwide by building consensus on development issues and advising the Boards of Governors of the Bank and Fund on the financial resources required to promote economic development in developing countries.
Besides, the Development Committee's 24 members, some representing blocs of countries, will also hear about progress the Bank is making in programmes to slow climate change and bring clean energy to developing countries.
Delegates will also receive papers on other important development issues including debt relief, global public goods, aid for trade, scaling up assistance to developing countries, Bank's lending to middle income countries, and voice and participation in developing and transition countries.
More than 100 civil society organisations and 550 journalists are expected to attend the meetings.
