The ministry of commerce (MoC) is set to construct an exhibition centre at Purbachal in the capital this year with an initial cost of Tk 2.75 billion, a high trade official said.

The structure will be built on 20 acres of land at Purbachal new town, about 16- kilometre off the zero point of the capital.

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), which is under the ministry of commerce (MoC), has already got 10 acres of land from the Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (RAJUK). It will get more 10 acres of land from the RAJUK.

Out of the initial amount, the Chinese government will provide Tk 2.10 billion as grant while the government of Bangladesh will bear Tk 650 million for constructing the much- desired exhibition centre.

To move the initiative forward the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design has submitted the design of the exhibition centre to the EPB.

"We hope to start construction work of 'Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre (BCFEC)' this year if we get more 10 acres of land from RAJUK," Vice-Chairman of the EPB Shubhashish Bose told the FE Friday.

He said the design of the BCFEC will be almost similar to that of Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC). He said the main building will be built on 10 acres of land while car parking and other facilities will be established on another 10 acres of land.

"Initially the structure will be a one storey building with the capacity to set up 500 stalls of different sizes," Mr Bose said.

He said once the exhibition centre is built then the Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) will be held there. Besides, other organisations could arrange fairs at BCFEC throughout the year.

He said the EPB annually arranges DITF at Agargaon in the capital on the open ground owned by the ministry of housing and public works.
