CHATTOGRAM, Apr 28: Several low-lying areas of the port city went under knee-to waist-deep water following heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday, disrupting normal life and causing widespread suffering for residents.

According to sources, the downpour began on Monday morning and continued until Tuesday evening. The local meteorological office recorded 57 mm of rainfall between 3:00pm Monday and 3:00pm Tuesday.

Most low-lying areas of the port city, including Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawkbazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali and Chaktai, were inundated for several hours due to the torrential rain.

Residents in these areas remained stranded as roads and lanes were submerged under knee-deep water.

The heavy rainfall severely affected daily life in the city.

Streets remained largely deserted as the movement of vehicles and pedestrians dropped significantly amid continuous showers and waterlogging.

Residents said even moderate rainfall regularly causes waterlogging in many parts of Chattogram, while heavy rain worsens the situation and leaves people facing serious hardship.

Meanwhile, the Bay of Bengal turned rough due to monsoon winds.

The Meteorological Department hoisted local cautionary signal No. 3 for Chattogram seaport due to adverse weather conditions.

It may be noted that although the government launched several projects in 2018 to permanently solve Chattogram's long-standing waterlogging problem, the projects are still ongoing and residents continue to suffer from the crisis every monsoon season.
