Most countries praise BD in UPR hearing, says Annisul

Bangladesh was praised by over 90 per cent of the 111 countries in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) held in the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva on Monday.
Law Minister Annisul Huq, who led the Bangladesh delegation in the UPR hearing on Bangladesh, said this in a briefing held virtually.
He added that issues related to elections, law enforcement, imprisonment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia were also raised by a few countries.
Some countries raised the issue of the digital security act, but "I told them that the Act was repealed and was replaced by a new act called the cyber security act", he said. "After I explained the government's position on these issues, none of them raised further questions."
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen were also present at the briefing.
The law minister said the UK, Canada and Belgium raised these issues.
Bangladesh was highly praised for the socioeconomic development and providing shelters to over one million Rohingya refugees, he added.
He said the UPR recommendations will be available tomorrow (Wednesday).
Mr Shahriar Alam said: "If one goes through the UPR documents, (s)he could see that the countries that were critical about Bangladesh faced more criticism about the HR situation in their countries."
