Most RMG units pay wages, allowance: BGMEA

Almost all garment factories in industrial belts have paid wages for the month of May and festival allowance to their workers, claimed the apex body of apparel traders on Saturday.
Labour leaders, however, accused some factories of paying partial payments of wages while problems arose over the announcement of Eid holidays at a few units.
According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), some 2,160 factories-1,835 located in Dhaka and 325 in Chattogram-registered with the trade body are currently in operation.
In a statement, the BGMEA claimed all but four factories have paid wages for May and festival allowance.
However, the payment of bonus by the remaining factories is under process.
When asked, Sammilita Garments Sramik Federation president Nazma Akter spoke about some factories that were still to make full payment of wages to workers.
Even problems arose over the announcement of Eid holidays at a few factories, she said.
Meantime, the Industrial Police (IP) in a separate statement also said almost all factories registered with the BGMEA, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association paid wages and bonus.
More than 9,800 factories, including textile and ready-made garment units, are under the jurisdiction of the IP in eight industrial belts of Ashulia, Gazipur, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Cumilla and Khulna except Dhaka metropolitan area.
According to data available with the IP, an estimated 2,250 are textile and garment factories and the rest are non-RMG units, including jute mills.
