Move to build 10km elevated haor road

A move has been made for a 10-kilometre two-lane elevated road to connect Kishoreganj Sadar and Mithamoin upazila amid criticism over first such road having possible impacts on the ecosystem.
The 30-kilometre road was developed in Itna, Mithamoin and Ostogram haor area, keeping some culverts open to river water flow on both sides of the road.
The Tk 8.74-billion road, known as all-season road, was inaugurated on October 08 last year.
Officials said the Bangladesh Bridges Authority (BBA) has already appointed the Bangladesh University of Technology and Engineering (BUET) to do a feasibility study on the proposed road.
They said this road is planned to establish a link between Karimganj of Kishoreganj and Mithamoin as the area is also known for fish breeding.
"We've proposed to conduct the study of the elevated road either from Morichkhali or Balikhali of Karimganj area to establish link with Mithamoin," said bridges division secretary Mohammad Belayet Hossain.
BBA executive director Belayet Hossain said the BUET is expected to complete the study within six months and a development project proposal would be prepared after getting the report.
He, however, said the BBA's preliminary study assumed that the length of  the road would be 10 kilometres and have some bridges in between over Bhora Uthray river.
The Itna-Mithamoin-Ostogram road goes straight through a vast haor area in parallel with Dhanu and Baulai rivers starting from Itna Sadar to Ostogram via Mithamoin upazila.
The haor area has long been isolated for lack of a road as a vast agricultural land remains submerged from the beginning of every rainy season.
The new road and the proposed elevated road will help establish connectivity to Sylhet-Brahmanbaria road, including with Dhaka, Sylhet and Chattogram in future.
