Music copyright conference held in Dhaka

The Bangladesh Lyricist Composers & Performers Society (BLCPS) held a conference in Dhaka's Gulshan Club on Tuesday to discuss intellectual property rights and royalties.
The International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) Honorary Advisor Satoshi Watanabe was the conference's keynote speaker, according to a press release.
In his speech, Mr Watanabe highlighted the role of collective management organisations in protecting music creators globally.
He also trained the Society on its function as the sole confederation partner in Bangladesh.
Daud Miah, registrar of the Copyright Office, and music director Sheikh Saadi Khan were among the attendees.
It can be noted that The Bangladesh Lyricist Composers & Performers Society is the first and only collective management organisation for music authorised by the government,
The conference explored the history of collective management organisations, dating back to 1777, and the importance of copyright protection recognised in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Discussants underscored the role of the Bangladesh Lyricist Composers & Performers Society, established in 2013, in ensuring songwriters, composers and performers receive royalties for their work both domestically and internationally.
The conference paid tribute to legendary composer Alauddin Ali and vocalist Andrew Kishore, who actively supported the Society until their passing.
The Society, led by music icon Sabina Yasmin, says it remains committed to safeguarding intellectual property in Bangladesh's music industry, aligning with the government's vision of a "Smart Bangladesh".
