People of the country's northern districts are fearing flood, as the major rivers in the areas continue swelling amid incessant rainfall and onrush of water from upstream, raising concern for Aman farmers.
The water levels of the rivers in the region were rising on Thursday and may continue to rise in the next 48 hours, said Mehadi Hasan, duty officer and assistant engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
The Teesta River at Kaunia point may flow close to its danger level in the next 24 hours.
In addition, water levels at 42 river stations, monitored by the FFWC, rose, while 65 stations recorded fall, he added.
The FFWC in its regular forecast on Thursday said there is a chance of heavy rainfall in the northern, north-eastern and adjoining upstream parts of Bangladesh in the next 48 hours.
For this reason, the Teesta, Dharla, Dudhkumar, Korotoa, Atrai, Kulikh, Tangon and Punarbhaba rivers of the northern region and the Surma-Kushiara, Someswari, Jadukata, Bhugai-Kangsha and Sarigowan rivers of the north-eastern region may rise rapidly at times during the period.
The Brahmaputra River is in a rising trend, while the Jamuna River is in a steady state. Both the rivers may rise in the next 48 hours, it forecasted.
Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said the rainfall may increase in the next 24 hours starting from Thursday evening.
