CHITTAGONG, Mar 23: Awami League-backed mayoral candidate AJM Nasir Uddin said today he will build Chittagong as a mega-city if elected in the Chittagong City Corporation election slated for April 28.
"It is possible to mitigate the sufferings of city people and develop Chittagong as a mega-city through proper implementation of planned schemes and management of the existing resources if I get support from city people," he told a press conference held at the Institute of Engineers Chittagong (IEC) in the city.
In a written statement, Nasir Uddin, also general secretary of city Awami League, said he would turn the city corporation into a service-oriented people-friendly organisation as he had worked a lot in the sports arena as BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) vice president and general secretary of Chattagram Zilla Krira Sanstha (CJKS).
"Our leader Sheikh Hasina herself has shouldered the responsibility for development of infrastructure in Chittagong. With her full support, I will turn it into a modern and beautiful city. My main task will be to resolve the water-logging problem of the city as half of 6 million people are suffering from water-logging during the monsoon."
Tk 3.0 billion worth new canal digging project from Bahaddarhat to Karnaphuli River had already been approved by the government, he said, adding that it would be implemented as top priority scheme with setting up of a large number of sluice gates to tame water-logging.
Mr Nasir said he would re-organise the whole waste management system in the city, re-fix the holding tax rate at a tolerable limit in consultation with holding owners. "I will also modernise General Hospital in the city with introduction of maternity hospital."
There is no adequate facility for children's entertainment. It will be one of his priority schemes to make the city as a place of entertainment. "The daughter of the Father of the Nation has a roadmap for development of the port city. My main task will be to implement her roadmap," he said.
Former Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury said he was also a candidate from the Awami League-led 14-party Alliance in the election, but he had pulled back from the election race at the behest of party leader Sheikh Hasina.
Ex-primary and mass education minister Dr Afsarul Ameen MP, MA Latif MP, Didarul Alam MP, presidents of Chittagong south district and north district Awami League Moslem Uddin Ahmed and Nurul Alam, member of the Awami League Advisory Council and former lawmaker Ishaque Meah and local leaders of Awami League, Sramik League, Juba League and Chhatra League were also present at the press conference.
