Nation observes Genocide Day today

The nation is set to observe the Genocide Day today (Monday) in remembrance of the brutality carried out by the Pakistan occupation army on unarmed Bangalees on the black night of March 25 in 1971 under the infamous 'Operation Searchlight'.
The government has taken up various programmes to mark the day at the state level with due respect, reports BSS.
A one-minute symbolic 'blackout' will be staged tonight throughout the country on the occasion.
The "blackout" programme will be observed from 11:00 pm to 11:01 pm to pay homage to those killed by the Pakistani occupation forces on the dreadful night in 1971.
However, establishments of emergency services will remain out of the purview of the programme, said an official handout.
On the eve of the Genocide Day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued special messages separately.
"The horrific genocide of 1971 is a black chapter not only in the history of Bangladesh but also in the history of world humanity," the President said in his message, adding that through the observance of the Genocide Day, it is expected that such genocide would not happen anywhere else.
He condemned the genocide that is still taking place in all the countries across the world, including Palestine.
The President called upon the international community, including the United Nations, to work together to stop genocide worldwide.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon all, including global people, to build a society based on equality and free from all kinds of discrimination and sectarianism.
"We follow Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's peace philosophy while running the country."
I appeal to the people of our country and the world to build a society based on equality and free from discrimination and sectarianism," she said.
The Prime Minister also said: "We do not want war and conflict; killing men, women and children has dipped us in solemn grief. We believe in peace. If sustainable peace prevails, the country's overall development will accelerate."
