CHITTAGONG, Mar 28: There is a lack of coordination in the government in implementing the customs automation process.
NBR (National Board of Revenue) Chairman Ghulam Hossain said this while speaking as the chief guest at a function in the Chittagong Customs House (CCH) Thursday.
He said, "The NBR has been working on the automation process in the customs over three ways at a cost of US$ 60 million but the work is suffering severely from lack of coordination."
"If we can control it under a single automation unit, we can achieve better outcome. The work is not being coordinated at the higher level of the government. There is no discussion or accountability either. We want to see coordination in all departments of the NBR," he said at the function.
The function was organised on the occasion of transferring technology to the ASYCUDA (Automated System for Customs Data) World at CCH conference hall in the city. Md Mahbubuzzaman, owner of Data Soft, a private organisation, handed the data soft technology to the NBR chief.
The NBR chairman, who is also secretary of Internal Resources Division (IRD), said technology transfer from the Data Soft was sought to strengthen the ASYCUDA World.
Member (Customs) of the NBR Nasir Uddin said from now on work in the CCH will come directly under the automation process of the NBR and all customs houses of the country will also come under the ASYCUDA technology now being used in CCH.
President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahbubul Alam said the occasion has brought a welcome message for all businesses because they have entered into an advanced technology, ASYCUDA World.
Presided over by the CCH commissioner the function was also addressed by NBR Member Hussain Ahmed, Nasiruddin, Kalipada Sarkar. Senior customs officials and port users were present on the occasion.
