NBR selects 72,341 tax returns for audit

FE Report | April 29, 2026 00:00:00

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has selected 72,341 income-tax returns for audit in the second phase of its automated audit process for the 2023-24 tax year, aiming to strengthen revenue mobilisation and ensure greater transparency.

Earlier, in the first phase conducted in July 2025, the NBR selected 15,494 cases for audit through a random selection method.

Under the new system, several specific criteria were followed, with each tax circle required to select a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 200 taxpayers for audit.

Since there is no provision for manual intervention in the selection process, the system is expected to ensure complete transparency in audit selection and improve taxpayer confidence.

The list of selected Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) for audit under the automated system has already been published on the NBR's website.

The fully automated audit selection process will not only strengthen transparency and neutrality within the organisation but also play a significant role in achieving its revenue targets.
