New AL acting GS for withdrawal of ban on politics, lifting emergency

Awami League (AL) acting general secretary (GS) Syed Ashraful Islam has expressed the hope that release of party chief Sheikh Hasina would be secured through legal and constitutional process and the party would take part in the general election under her leadership.
"We will continue legal battle for the release of Sheikh Hasina and I think she would be freed through legal and constitutional process and the party will move forward under her direction," the acting GS told journalists at the party's Dhanmondi office after taking the charge Sunday.
Ashraf demanded lifting of ban on indoor politics across the country and general election at the earliest. "There is no alternative to democracy and people of Bangladesh struggled time and again and sacrifice blood to establish their voting right and democracy."
The acting GS also demanded immediate withdrawal of emergency.
He congratulated the chief of the caretaker government (CG) Fakruddin Ahmed's remarks that an non-elected government should not stay in power for long.
