The markets in the city's New Market area reopened on Thursday after two days of sporadic clashes between the Dhaka College (DC) students and traders of the markets.

The decision of reopening shops was taken after long discussions between the representatives of students and traders along with the DC teachers and government officials on Wednesday night.

The shops were opened at 10:00 am on the day amid tight security. A large number of law-enforcers were also present at the time of reopening. They stayed in the area for about half a day to ensure security.

Chandrima Super Market, Gausia, Nurjahan Super Market, Globe Super Market, and the shops near Balaka Cinema Hall were fully open, and customers were also seen in several shops. However, five shops of Nurjahan Market that were damaged in a fire did not reopen.

Gates 1, 2 and 3 of New Market were also open, but its fourth gate was damaged in the violence and was undergoing repairs, according to the eye witnesses.

Salauddin Ahmed, a salesman of a clothing store at Globe Super Market, said they reopened the shops and customers were also coming.

"We've not seen any problem and are not facing any after reopening," he added.

Dewan Aminul Islam Shaheen, president of Dhaka New Market Business Owners' Association, said the decision of reopening the markets on Thursday came from a meeting on Wednesday night.

The officials from the Ministry of Education and Bangladesh Police, president and general secretary of Bangladesh Shop Owners' Association, representatives of various markets in New Market area, as well as the teachers and students of Dhaka College attended the meeting.

"We hope, there will be no conflict after the meeting," he added.

Earlier, the agitating students placed ten-point demands at a press conference on Wednesday. After a few hours, the meeting was arranged, and the decision to reopen shops came.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, sporadic clashes took place between the DC students and the traders. Two persons died and around 300 were injured.
