Nine sand workers suffered burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack on a truck at Moghirdal on Magura-Jessore highway in Sadar upazila of Magura Saturday night, reports UNB.

Five of the victims were identified as Imran, 25, Faruk Laskar, 35, Nazmul Alam, 35, Nawsher Ali, 40, and Elias Ali, 40.

Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Jahangir Alam said a group of sand workers were returning to Magura from Jessore by the truck.

As the truck reached Moghirdal, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the vehicle around 8pm, leaving nine of the workers burned.

The injured were whisked off to Magura Sadar Hospital where the condition of four was stated to be critical.

FE Report adds: The BNP-led 20-party alliance has called another spell of 72-hour countrywide hartal starting at 6:00am today (Sunday) amid the non-stop transport blockade which passed off 75th day on Saturday.

The alliance has called the hartal, which will end at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, demanding release of its leaders and activists, including BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed. BNP joint secretary general Barkatullah in a statement on Saturday called the general strike for the eighth week in a row.

"BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed has not been released or brought to the court even after 11 days of his arrest. The government is yet to admit his arrest as well. Therefore, there is no alternative but to continue the movement," the statement reads.

The statement claimed that former organising secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Anisur Rahman Talukder, faced the same fate as Salahuddin Ahmed.

The opposition leaders and activists are being detained and abducted by the law enforcers while people are also being killed in 'gunfight' and harassed in the remand, the statement alleged.

Police arrested 10 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir for 'sabotage plan' from different places of the city during a drive continuing for 24 hours till Saturday morning. Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Masudur Rahman said eight leaders and activists of BNP, two of Jamaat-Shibir were arrested from different parts of the city.

They were arrested for planning subversive activities during the countrywide non-stop transport blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, he said.

Vehicular movement was normal while a large number of law enforcers remained deployed in different parts of the city to fend off any trouble.

Miscreants torched a passenger bus in front of Rampura TV Bhaban in the city  around 3pm on Saturday.  Nobody was injured in the arson attack, according to Rampura thana police.
