Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu told the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday that no decision was taken yet by the Ministry of Information to give permission for new TV channels, reports BSS.
Replying to a question from treasury bench member Monwara Begum (reserved seat-17), Inu said the government had so far given permission for 41 TV channels in the private sector. "Now 23 TV channels are operative in the private sector and three TV channels in the public sector," he said.
Inu also told the questioner that the total number of Bangla and English dailies being published in the country stood at 885. Of those, he said, the number of Bangla daily newspapers was 819 and the number of English dailies 66.
Responding to another question from Awami League lawmaker Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury, the minister said 32 pay channels and eight free channels of India were now airing their programmes in Bangladesh.
