No more arrests over Ashulia bank robbery

FE Report | April 24, 2015 00:00:00

Police failed to arrest any more persons in connection with Tuesday's daylight bank robbery in Ashulia until Thursday evening, sources said.

Two suspected bandits were caught by the local people while they were fleeing. One of them was lynched by the mob and another was handed over to police.

Later, police arrested another suspected bandit on Tuesday evening from a nearby area, said the sources.

"We didn't arrest any more suspected persons in connection with the robbery," superintendent of police (SP) of Dhaka Habibur Rahman told the FE Thursday evening.

In reply to a query, Mr Rahman said: "No video footage was found from the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) that was set up at the bank branch."

Observing the style of the robbery and use of materials including grenade, bags, petrol and their information and speech, it seems that they are not professional bandits.

The incident might have been a sabotage and was made in order to create terror, he said.

They might be involved with any organised body, he said, adding that it was difficult to get information from the two detained suspected dacoits.

The armed gang attack took place on the Kathgara Bazar branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd (BCBL) in Ashulia of Savar that left eight people including its branch manager dead.

In reply to another query, the SP further said police are looking into the incident and two cases have been filed in this connection.

On Wednesday morning, the bank filed a case with Ashulia Police Station against two suspects - Saiful Islam and Borhan Uddin - captured on Tuesday and 8 to 10 others in connection with the armed attack.

Meanwhile, sub-inspector of the same police station Zakaria Hossain lodged another case against some 300 anonymous people for beating one of the suspected bandits to death.
