August 10, 2007 00:00:00

In the wake of the High Court's stay order on the operation of the notice issued to Sheikh Hasina for submitting wealth statement, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury Thursday said the notice was flawless and the fight is not over yet, reports UNB.
"We issued (the notice) knowing it was flawless…Legally, we are right. Certainly, the fight is not over yet… in principle, our stand is firm," he told reporters in the afternoon when asked if the issuance of notice to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for submitting wealth statement was flawless.
About the change of existing law, the ACC chairman said: "No such situation has yet arisen that needs change in the law."
He, however, said if it is deemed necessary to change the law it would be done after taking advice and suggestions.
Saying that the commission would abide by what the court says, Mashhud said: "Our action was okay. If the honourable court thinks it was not correct, we will understand where the mistake lies. Then efforts will be made to correct the mistake."
"We will not concede defeat…We will not give up the fight," he said.
About a meeting with a number of senior lawyers including Dr Kamal Hossain, Dr M Zahir, Justice TH Khan, Khan Saifur Rahman and Habibul Islam Bhuiyan, the ACC chairman said the Commission and the lawyers would work together. By the day's meeting, people would know that they (the senior lawyers) are with the Commission.
