CHATTOGRAM, June 08: A total of 135 ships have already berthed at the jetty of Matarbari deep-sea port channel at Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar.

Sources have said 175-metre and 10-metre draught ships  are getting the berthing facilities at the port jetty.

When contacted, CPA Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail has said, "135 ships have berthed at the Matarbari deep-sea port jetty. We're berthing 175-metre and 10-metre draught ship."

"After getting the channel on September 20 last year, we're gearing up the facilities of the deep-sea port. Now, we can berth oil tankers of 50,000-MT capacity at the jetty," he added.

Berthing big oil tankers at the deep-sea port is already influencing the market of oil in the country as the carrying cost of oil is reduced now, he also says.

After completion of the deep-sea port project, the country's export, import and maritime connectivity will increase remarkably. The port will gear up the total capacity of the Chittagong Seaport for handling several times more cargoes and containers, the CPA chairman continues.

"To build a deep-sea port to expand the capacity of Chittagong Seaport was the demand of time. Our Prime Minister declared a role model for the blue economy and a deep-sea port at Matarbari is being constructed as per the model. After construction of the deep-sea port, a new economic belt will develop from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar which will enrich our economy," he goes on.

The Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) handed over the responsibility of the Matarbari deep-sea port channel to the CPA at a programme held in Chattogram on September 20, 2023.

Sources said the CPA has signed the agreement with Nippon Koei Company on September 23, 2020.
