Law-enforcers arrested an accused namely Md. Mahbubur Rahman for spreading rumour on facebook about the stock market.
DB police arrested him on Tuesday from Brahman-baria, said a release issued by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).
The arrest of Mr. Rahman came in the backdrop of the recent falling trend of the country's stock market.
The BSEC said an individual namely Md. Mahbubur Rahman on December 19, 2021 spread rumour through a facebook page titled 'Share Bazar 2021'.
"Mr. Rahman made a facebook post writing 'Come out of the market by selling out securities whatever you can..Index will come down to 5600 points..it's not panic, reality," said the release.
Social media monitoring team of the securities regulator has found that Mr. Rahman tried to influence the market in different times spreading rumours.
"His motive of spreading rumours was to make investors confused," said the release.
Earlier, an official of the securities regulator lodged a general diary against Mr. Rahman on December 23, 2021 with Sher-e-Bangla Police station.
As part of the regulatory move to contain rumours, the BSEC earlier held a meeting with the representatives of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and the digital security agency of Bangladesh Computer Council.
Taking co-operations of telecommunication authority and digital security agency, the securities regulator continued its monitoring on rumours spread through social media.
An inquiry committee comprising of representatives of stock exchanges and depository authority looked into different groups of social media which spread rumours to influence market prices of listed securities.
According to the inquiry report, the facebook groups which tried to influence stock prices spreading rumours include DSE Investors' Club, We Want to be Gainers, The Third Eye, Share Bazar-DSE Investors' Club, Public Business Club, Share Market Super Star Club and The Loyal Club.
Many groups were closed after the securities regulator conducted a drive to identify individuals having involvement with spreading rumours.
