CHITTAGONG, Nov 28 (UNB): A man died and at least 26 people went missing as a fishing trawler capsized in the Bay of Bengal near the Saint Martin's Island early Friday.
Sources at the Chittagong Sea Port said the fishing boat named 'FB Bandhan' of Bengal Fisheries Limited with some 29 crew members capsized in the bay as another trawler hit it around 5am while it was going into the deep sea for fishing.
On information, Navy patrol ship 'Samudra Joy' rushed in and rescued two people and recovered the body of another while the
others went missing.
The deceased was identified as Lavlu while the two rescued as Sajib Hossain, a junior officer of the trawler, and Nasir, a crew member, said an official of Bengal Fisheries Ltd Mohammad Nasir Uddin.
Two Navy ships-BNS Atandra and BNS Sagar-and a maritime patrol aircraft along with 'Samudra Joy' and Coast Guard team members were conducting operation to trace the missing people, said Lieutenant Commander Khawaja Masum.
Meanwhile, the Mercantile Marine Department has formed a three-member committee, headed by its engineer and ship surveyor SM Sirajul Islam, to probe the incident.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within five days, said Shafiqul Islam, principal officer of the department's Chittagong office.
