One more dies of dengue amid seven new cases of Covid-19

One more death from dengue fever and 169 fresh infections were reported across Bangladesh in the 24 hours till Saturday morning, while seven new Covid-19 cases were also detected during the same period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the latest fatality, the total number of deaths from the mosquito-borne disease rose to 29 this year, while the number of confirmed dengue cases reached 5,739 since January.

The victim of the latest dengue casualty was reported from the  Chattogram Division (outside the city corporation areas), the DGHS said in its daily update.

During the reporting period, Barishal Division reported the highest number of new dengue cases with 101 infections. Chattogram Division (excluding city corporations) recorded 28 new cases, while Dhaka Division (outside city corporations) reported five. Within Dhaka city, 19 new cases were detected in Dhaka South City Corporation area and 16 in Dhaka North City Corporation area.

As of Saturday morning, a total of 633 dengue patients were undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country. Last year, Bangladesh experienced its worst-ever dengue outbreak, which claimed the lives of 575 people. A total of 101,214 dengue cases were recorded in 2023, with 100,040 recoveries, according to official figures.

Meanwhile, the country saw seven new cases of Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Saturday morning. With the latest infections, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases has reached 20,51,807.

No new fatalities from the virus were reported during the period, keeping the total death toll unchanged at 29,502.

According to the DGHS, 139 samples were tested for coronavirus between 8:00am Friday and 8:00am Saturday, resulting in a daily positivity rate of 5.04 per cent. The overall positivity rate now stands at 13.05 per cent, while the fatality rate remains at 1.44 per cent.

The total number of Covid-19 recoveries has now reached 20,19,401, the DGHS said.
