CHITTAGONG, Jan 12: General Secretary of the Forum for Planned Chittagong and senior architect Zerina Hossain has severely criticised the CDA (Chittagong Development Authority) plan to construct flyovers one after another in the port city.
She said construction of such flyovers would not lessen the woes of the city dwellers as the plans have not been designed to do good to the common people but only to a class who use private cars.
"If you don't think about most of the population, rather think of a very few people who ride private cars, you will never be able to bring welfare for the city people," she said.
Zerina Hossain was addressing a press conference on 'Planned Development Priorities of Chittagong' organised by Greater Chittagong Development Action Committee at Chittagong Press Club on Monday afternoon.
She said there is no footpath in the city. "Although it is called a city, it doesn't have the status of a city. There is no roadmap either. If there is no road, how will the city be developed?" she asked.
The CDA is arbitrarily doing the development work without any plan or management, she alleged adding that it has even no town planner. The CDA is simply an implementing engineering agency, she said.
It can be recalled that CDA has constructed Bahaddarhat and Dewanhat flyovers in the city. These are not being used by vehicles of the common people. A few private cars use these two flyovers, she said.
"Flyovers should be constructed for use of public transports so that they can avoid traffic congestion in the city. But a survey reveals that only 1.2 per cent vehicles in the city use these flyovers," she said.
