All ministries have been asked to submit by February 01 respective action plans on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the government gears up for framing national agenda to execute the universal uplift blueprint.
As part of the move, General Economics Division (GED) of the Planning Commission (PC) sent letters last week to the ministries seeking the plans separately, officials said.
A complete action plan will be presented to the prime minister with approval from the committee of implementation and review concerned "as soon as possible", they added.
The ministries have been asked to prepare and provide outlines of action plans in the light of the objectives of the newly adopted SDGs by February 01 next, a high official of the division told the FE Monday.
The SDGs, adopted at the recent UN-brokered summit of nations, list 169 targets across 17 goals to be achieved by 2030. Of these, 14 targets in total are directly related to Health, Nutrition and Population (HNP) sectors, according to the GED.
Bangladesh has successfully achieved the targets and indicators of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The country also contributed to preparing the current global development recipe, SDGs, said a source concerned.
Bangladesh had sent its proposals in June 2013 to the United Nations (UN) preparing its SDGs. The GED sent a prepared proposal to the UN with 58 targets and 241 indicators. Of the indicators, 10 have been reflected in the final SDGs of the UN, also mentioned the letter.
The prime ministers' office (PMO) has initiated the move to ensure successful and effective implementation of the SDGs like the MDGs.
"In this connection, a high-powered committee has been formed to review and implement the SDGs," the letter reads.
The GED prepared the roadmap on SDGs in the light of the 7th five- year plan, which will be finalized after getting relevant information from the ministries and divisions, a senior official of the GED said.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) of the government approved the 7th five-year plan in October 2015.
Earlier, all ministries and divisions had primarily identified their targets on SDGs in combination with the new five-year plan, he said.
The SDGs, officially known as 'transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development', are an intergovernmental set of aspiration Goals with 169 targets.
The Goals are contained in paragraph 51 of the United Nations Resolution. The Resolution is a broader inter-governmental agreement acting as the Post-2015 Development Agenda (successor to the MDG).
