Petition seeks ACC inquiry into assets of ex-DMP chief Asaduzzaman Mia

FE REPORT | June 28, 2024 00:00:00

A petition has been filed seeking Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) inquiry into the allegations of accumulating illegal assets by former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and his family members.

Salah Uddin Reagan, a Supreme Court lawyer, submitted the petition to the ACC chairman on Thursday.

In the petition, the lawyer said different media outlets in the country have published reports on amassing illegal wealth by the ex-DMP chief and his family members.

It is very unfortunate that despite publication of reports in the national dailies, no initiative has been taken by the authorities to enquire into the allegations of amassing illegal wealth, read the petition.

The petition further said, "It is the inaction of the ACC  whereas the Prime Minister has accepted 'zero tolerance' policy against corruption. News publication on law enforcers' corruption in the national dailies undermines public confidence and trust in the law enforcement agencies of the state and creates confusion in the public mind. Therefore, it is specially requested to take initiative of proper enquiry into the allegations against Asaduzzaman Mia and his family members."

The lawyer tagged some published reports with the petition.

Former DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has now come into discussion regarding his assets following a newspaper report published the day before Eid-ul-Azha.

It said the former senior police official's wife owns a house and two apartments in Dhaka while his son owns a house and his daughter an apartment.

Additionally, his wife and children have 67 decimals of land in Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj.

His family members collectively own 166 more decimals of land in these three districts, according to the reports.

In response, Asaduzzaman Mia claimed in various interviews that all his assets were acquired through legal means and emphasised that his children were capable of acquiring the properties with their own lawful earnings.
