FE Report
A veteran photo journalist was found dead at his residence in the capital's Rampura on Wednesday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as Aftab Ahmed (79), who served as chief photographer of Bangla newspaper Daily Ittefaq, used to live alone on the second floor of a four-storied building at 63 West Rampura in the city.
The senior lensman was also awarded Ekushey Padak in 2006 for his outstanding contribution to the Liberation War in 1971.
Talking to the FE, Sub-Inspector of Rampura Police Station Monjurul Islam said they recovered the body lying on the floor from the bed room of the victim's house at about 11:30am and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for autopsy.
"We suspect that the senior photo journalist was strangled to death. The murder will be ascertained on the basis of autopsy report," he said.
Soon after the recovery of the body, Detective Branch (DB) of police, officials of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rushed to the spot to collect evidence from the spot.
However, plainclothes policemen detained the victim's housemaid, Nasima, for interrogation.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station Krepa Shindhu Bala said Aftab was used to live in the house alone.
His son Monowar Ahmed lives in Jessore while the daughter Afroza Ahmed lives in Gazipur with her husband, he said, mentioning that a part-time maid servant, who used to do the household chores of the veteran journalist, first spotted the body at his house.
On her information, a police team went there and entered into the apartment after breaking the door. "The miscreants tied his hands and legs before killing," he said.
According to the police official, the law enforcers were trying to apprehend the victim's driver - Kabir, who remained absconding since the incident.
"If we can arrest the driver, it will be easy for us to unveil the mystery behind the sensational murder," the OC added.
Neighbours said the part-time maid Nasima informed them when Ahmed was not opening the door of his apartment in the morning despite frequent knockings.
Citing family members, DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (DB) Maruf Hasan said the driver joined the job from December 1 last.
"We came to know that Aftab Ahmed often had altercation with the driver, Kabir over money-related affairs," he said.
