The government has shelved for the time being its plan to appoint fertiliser dealers at the union level before the next Boro season. The plan was aimed at ensuring proper distribution of fertiliser and avert any supply shortfall of the commodity, sources said.
They said the government at the recommendation of the Ministry of Industries in May this year decided to appoint dealers at the union level.
Sources said the move was taken in the light of the findings of an official committee formed to probe into reasons for 'fertiliser crisis' that hit the country's farming sector in January-March period this year.
They said the committee alleged that a section of the existing dealers resorted to hoarding of fertiliser during the peak season in January and February last to gain windfall profit.
The committee suggested appointment of new dealers at the union level before the ongoing Aman season.
The Industries Ministry, sources said, planned to start the process of appointing dealers at the union level in July but renewed licences of existing 4800 dealers until October considering that the redistribution of dealership before the ongoing Aman season might hamper supply of the agricultural input.
Sources said it was, however, decided that the appointment of new dealers would be completed before the upcoming Boro season.
