Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged the international community to strengthen its efforts to further democratise the UN for a greater voice of developing countries to realise these noble goals for the common good of humanity, reports UNB.
She made the call in a message issued on the occasion of United Nations Day, 2010 to be observed today (Sunday). Hasina reaffirmed the unwavering commitment to the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations as enunciated in the Constitution of Bangladesh.
Hasina said the United Nations Day visits us every year as an occasion to renew our faith in the collective capacity of humankind to create for ourselves a world free from fear and want.
The United Nations, founded 65 years ago, continues to embody the hopes and aspirations of the peoples of the world to live in peace and dignity, in freedom and progress, she added. The Prime Minister mentioned that it is as relevant as it was six decades ago in harnessing the collective will and action of the international community in addressing some of the greatest challenges of the 21st century, including widespread poverty and hunger, terrorism, transnational crime, climate change, migration and the menace of pandemics.
"It remains the sole universal body, relentlessly promoting peace and security in troubled zones of the world, strengthening democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, and alleviating the sufferings of the downtrodden with justice and development." "In Bangladesh, we believe in the UN. One of the largest troops contributors to UN's peace-keeping missions, including the most perilous ones, Bangladesh has demonstrated its unswerving commitment to protecting humanity from the scourge of war." "We are at the same time, resolute in our diplomacy as an active, responsible and contributing member of the global community-at the UN Peace-building Commission, or Human Rights Council in the ECOSOC for consolidation of democracy, human rights, women's empowerment and the rule of law and social upliftment", she added.
