Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina approved Monday a proposal placed by the ministry of local government and rural development (LGRD) and cooperatives to take necessary preparations for holding the Dhaka City Corporation elections.
The PM at a meeting with her cabinet members has asked the ministry to hold Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) polls as early as possible.
After getting approval from the PM, the ministry of LGRD and cooperatives will now ask the Election Commission (EC) to take necessary preparations and announce the polls schedule as early as possible, ministry sources said.
Earlier on February 16, the prime minister at a meeting with her cabinet members discussed the city corporation elections and chose former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Annisul Huq as Awami League candidate for the mayoral election to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Hasina also directed the ministers to nominate a single candidate for DSCC polls. She asked the party leaders to work together so that the candidates of the party (Awami League) could win the elections. Besides, the council of ministers discussed the Chittagong City Corporation elections, meeting sources said.
The last election of undivided DCC was held in April 2002 and its tenure expired in 2007.
The DCC was bifurcated on November 30, 2011 with DSCC having 56 wards and DNCC having 36 wards. The two city corporations are now run by administrators.
Following the bifurcation of the Dhaka City Corporation, fresh elections were originally slated for May 24, 2012.
However, the High Court issued a three-month stay order as there were complexities regarding delimitation and preparation of the voter list.
The stay order was finally lifted by the court on May 13 last year, paving the way for the elections.
