CHITTAGONG, Mar 20: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate 14 development projects and lay the foundation stone for another 28 projects amounting to over Tk 143.25 billion tomorrow in Chittagong.

She will open the projects from Patiya Model High School ground, some 22 kilometres off the port city just adjacent to the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to address a public meeting after 17 years. She addressed her last public meeting in Patiya in southern Chittagong in 2001.

The public meeting is being organised jointly by Chittagong south district unit, north district unit and Chittagong city unit of the Awami League.

Patiya, a historic sub-divisional town known for its heritage, culture, tradition and the spirit of liberation from the British rule, was a prominent place and sub-division since the early British period in the Indian sub-continent.

Chittagong was liberated for four days by Masterda Surya Sen in the thirties of the 20th century as Mr Sen and his warriors fought the British in Chittagong from different hideouts in Patiya.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman appointed the then Awami League leader Zakerul Haque  Chowdhury as Governor of South at the outset of BAKSAL (Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League) declared by him in 1974.

Organisers said more than 3,000 security personnel from the police, APBN (armed police battalion), RAB (rapid action battalion) President Guard Regiment and Special Security Forces will be deployed in and around the meeting venue.

They said the Prime Minister will arrive in Patiya by a helicopter at around 3.00 pm and will land from the helicopter at the newly-constructed helipad about three kilometres off the meeting venue from which she will reach the venue by a motorcade.

She will also leave Patiya by helicopter.

Dozens of the party central leaders and ministers will accompany the PM and address the meeting, the organisers said.

They were speaking at a press conference organised at Chittagong Press Club on Monday.

Among the major projects, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation for the nearly Tk 60 billion-Chittagong Water Logging Mitigation, Rehabilitation, Renovation and Development project of the Chittagong Development Authority, Lalkhan Bazar- Chittagong Airport Elevated Expressway of the CDA, Kalurghat Road-cum-Rail Bridge on the Karnaphuli River, Karnaphuli Dredging Project from Sadarghat to Bakolia Char of the Chittagong Port Authority, several power stations of the PDB and inaugurate the Muradpur-Lalkhan Bazar Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Flyover.

The projects for foundation laying also includes Kalurghat-Chaktan Khal Road Construction along the bank of the Karnaphuli River, Sangu and Dalu Rivers Protection projects of the Water Development Board at Satkania and Lohagara upazilas of Chittagong, a number of roads and bridges to connect the inter-upazilas of Chittagong south, north and city, academic complexes with ICT facilities of different colleges.

The Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway from the 3rd Karnaphuli Bridge to Dohazari beyond Patiya has been decorated with posters and festoons

displaying portrits of Bangabandhu, Prime Minister and her son Sajib Wajed Joy to receive the Prime Minister.

It is estimated that over 0.3 million people will attend the Patiya School Ground meeting. (the end), 20.3.18,
