Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was learnt to have asked the ministry of local government and rural development Monday to move fast for holding the stalled Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) elections.
Informed sources said such signal came when the country's ongoing political situation came up for discussion during the day's cabinet meeting.
She reportedly mentioned the name of former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Annisul Huq as Awami League choice for mayoral election to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Two of the ministers who attended the meeting confirmed the matter, requesting anonymity.
"We are preparing to hold elections to both the city corporations - Dhaka North and Dhaka South," the sources quoted LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam as saying.
The Prime Minister is also going to pick a candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the sources added.
Following the bifurcation of the Dhaka City Corporation on November 30, 2011, fresh elections were originally slated for May 24, 2012.
