MOHANPUR, Chandpur, Mar 29 (BSS): Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina today urged all followers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to forge unity to protect the independence, constitution and democracy.
"All Mujib followers must remain united so that none can undermine our independence, constitution and democracy," she said.
She was addressing a large public gathering here on the occasion of her visit to Chandpur after inauguration of the locally built passenger vessel M.V. Bangali belonging to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).
"People of Bangladesh must remain united and forge strong unity with the spirit of the war of liberation to reach the benefit of independence to every house," Sheikh Hasina said.
She urged all workers of Awami League (AL) and its front organisations to strengthen the organisations and work for the causes of the people. Lots of people of Bangladesh only changed when AL was in power, she said.
Sheikh Hasina sought support of the people against the force which pioneered politics of killing, coup and conspiracy and handed forth the national flag to the war criminals.
In this connection, the PM expressed her firm resolve to try the war criminals saying, trial of the war criminals, al-badar and rajakars must be held, none will be able to protect them.
Laying importance on keeping the pro-liberation force in the state power, she said, the country progressed only when AL was in power.
Food production has increased, people have got health service at the door step, power generation augmented and investment has got a boost after AL assumed office in 1996 and 2009.
Pointing out the development programmes initiated by her government, the PM said, AL government has put in place an economic system so that people can earn on their own to maintain their lives.
In this connection she mentioned about 'One Home-One Farm Project', community healthcare centre and allowance for elderly people, widows, disable persons and poor.
"We want a prosperous nation and this country, born through shedding bloods of millions of martyrs. The blood of martyrs can never go in vain, and we will not allow it," she said.
About the introduction of steamer service from Dhaka to Mohanpur, the PM said, once there was steamer service from Mohanpur. But, unfortunately the service remained abandoned over the years.
UNB adds: The PM commissioned the new passenger vessel, MV Bangalee, on Dhaka-Barisal route via Chandpur.
