Police are yet to arrest anyone in connection with the killing of writer-cum-blogger Avijit Roy even 24 hours after the gruesome incident that took place in TSC area of Dhaka University Thursday night.

Unidentified miscreants launched an attack on the blogger couple with sharp weapons near "Raju Bhaskarja" on the Dhaka University campus while they were returning from Ekushey Book fair about 9:00 pm.

They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where attending doctors declared Avijit dead. However, his wife Banya was undergoing treatment at DMCH with critical injuries.

Minutes after the killing, an extremist group Ansarulla Bangla Team-7 in a twitter status claimed the responsibility for the brutal killing, saying that they had been waiting for the day for years.

Police and CID (Crime Investigation Department) officers visited the spot Friday morning and collected samples to find some sorts of clues about the killing that sparked widespread protests in various parts of the country.

Victim's father Ajay Roy, a retired physics professor of Dhaka University, Friday morning filed a case with Shabagh police station, accusing unnamed assailants in connection with the incident that also left Avijit's wife Rafida Ahmed Banya critically wounded.

Meanwhile, the Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh has condemned the killing of writer-blogger Avijit Roy and injury of his wife on Thursday night.

It also called for a "prompt" investigation to bring perpetrators to justice.

The EU reiterated its "strong attachment to freedom of expression which constitutes an essential element of a democratic society".

"The EU Ambassador expresses his condolences to Mr Roy's family," said an EU statement on Facebook on Friday.

British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Gibson earlier expressed his shock over the killing in a tweet.
