The country's poultry industry is ideal for employment generation, as the sector has the potential to create hundreds of thousands of jobs in Bangladesh particularly, in the rural areas, two senior ministers said Wednesday.
"The industry is inching towards that goal," Finance Minister AMA Muhith said while addressing the agents' conference-2010 of Kazi Farms Group at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
"Not only meeting the demand of food protein, it has also created employment for around 5.0 million people and as many others will be accommodated within a short time," the finance minister said.
Mr Muhith as chief guest said the sector is an ideal one for Bangladesh as it can be developed with limited investment.
The fast growing poultry industry was becoming a source of income for thousands of unemployed young men in the country, who were taking up the business to change their fortune and many have turned out successful.
Food and Disaster Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque said the poultry farm owners in the country run their businesses with the risk of bird flu outbreak. "Their businesses need to be covered by insurance."
Mr Razzaque urged Mr Muhith to take necessary steps to compensate the poultry farm owners affected by the recent bird flu attacks.
