A number of power plants remained closed since August 2 forcing the Power Development Board (PDB) to resort to heavy loadshedding across the country, reports UNB.
According to a PDB press release, the country's power generation dropped by 600 MW because of the forced shutdown on account of technical faults, maintenance and disruption in gas supply.
Expressing regrets for the public sufferings due to power disruption and loadshedding, the PDB said steps have been taken to improve the situation and repair the faults at the earliest.
The PDB mentioned that production at its 100-MW Baghabari plant and the 90-MW Westmont plant had to be shut down following leakage in the gas pipeline at Nolka Bridge point in the Karotoa river. Petrobangla expected that they would be able to repair the pipeline by August 17.
Of the other closed plants, the 190-MW unit-4 of the Ghorasal Power Station will resume operation on August 14 and the 125-MW unit-1 of the Barapukuria power plant will come back into production by August 31 after necessary repairs.
Similarly, a 180-MW unit at Chittagong power station is expected to resume operation from August 25 and the 80-MW Tongi power plant started functioning from August 10.
The PDB said that the country was expected to generate 3,350 MW electricity during the peak hours Sunday.
