Power outages have become rampant again with the advent of summer as technical glitches in power plants and gas crisis have been squeezing electricity generation.
Ongoing irrigation season also has hiked the demand for electricity worsening the power supply situation, said a senior Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) official.
Backup power systems like instant power supply (IPS) and uninterrupted power system (UPS) have also started failing to provide electricity in the absence of sufficient grid supply, consumers said.
These systems do not get enough electricity to charge batteries, they alleged.
Businesses are bearing the brunt of frequent load-shedding as industrial output is being hampered.
Saturday's overall electricity generation across the country was around 6,700 megawatts (MW) against the demand for over 7,500 MW.
Installed capacity of the power plants is around 11,000 MW.
Technical glitches accounted for around 2,200 MW of electricity load-shedding, while gas crisis contributed to around 300 MW outages.
Power ministry officials, however, said the electricity supply situation will improve after the irrigation season that officially started from March 01.
A number of power plants including rental and quick rental plants will also be operational soon to supply additional electricity.
City dwellers are facing load-shedding in various areas at different times, it was learnt.
