A powerful Myanmar delegation is arriving in Dhaka in the first week of September to discuss ways to boost bilateral cooperation in trade, commerce, investment and tourism between the two countries, diplomatic sources said.
They said General Maung Aye, vice-chairman of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), is expected to lead the delegation during a three-day visit.
Maung is coming to Bangladesh at the invitation of Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed. He will be accompanied by senior government officials and business leaders.
Sources, however, could not say the exact time of the visit.
Besides discussions on matters of common interest, the Yangon side will seek Dhaka's permission to appoint an honorary consul general in the port city of Chittagong to boost bilateral trade.
"We will discuss about signing of an agreement on avoidance of double taxation between the two countries," an official source said.
The two-way trade between Bangladesh and Myanmar currently hovers at around only $60 million a year, but both sides believe the trade volume of the two countries will surpass the $100 million mark if more opportunities are created.
