Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, presidium member of Awami League and deputy leader of Parliament, was laid to eternal rest Monday at the Banani Graveyard in the capital with state honor, report agencies.
Faridpur-2 MP Sajeda Chowdhury passed away at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Sunday night at the age of 87.
She had been ill for a long, her family said.
The deputy leader of the House was admitted to hospital with post-Covid-19 complications two weeks ago.
Her body was first taken to her electoral constituency Nagarkanda in Faridpur on Monday. There, the first namaz-e-janaza was held at MN Academy school ground of the upazila at around 11:15am.
The body was brought back to the capital by a helicopter and taken to the Central Shaheed Minar where people from all walks of life paid their respects to the veteran AL leader.
Later, the body was taken to AL central office in the city's Bangabandhu Avenue around 5:00 pm.
Awami League's associate organizations Jubo League, Krishak League, Swechchasebak League, Sramik League and other organizations paid their last respects.
Awami League leaders led by the party General Secretary Obaidul Quader paid their respects on the coffin wrapped in Awami League party flag and national flag. After another Namaz-e-Janaza at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Asar prayer, the brave freedom fighter was buried at Banani Graveyard.
Born in 1935, Sajeda became the deputy leader of the House in 2019 for the third consecutive term.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid expressed shock and deep grief at the death of Sajeda.
In a condolence message, the President said that Sajeda Chowdhury played an important role in movement to establish democracy in Bangladesh.
"After the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975, her contributions to keeping the organizational base of Bangladesh Awami League strong will be remembered with respect. Her courage and uncompromising leadership showed the nation the path of light in any critical moment of the country. Her death has created a vacuum in the political arena of the country," he added.
The President prayed for the departed soul and expressed sympathy to her bereaved family.
In her condolence massage Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the nation has suffered an irreparable loss due to the death of Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury.
"We have lost a seasoned politician while I've lost a true guardian," she said in tributes to Sajeda Chowdhury.
