The investigation of the graft case filed Wednesday by the Anti-Corruption Commission against detained BNP senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman and his wife Jobaida Rahman and mother-in-law Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu will begin Sunday, reports UNB.
"The Commission today approved the appointment of assistant director Taufiqul Islam as the investigation officer (IO) in the case against Tarique Rahman. On receiving the letter from the Commission, the IO will begin his work on Sunday," a competent source at the ACC said Thursday.
The anti-graft watchdog filed a first information report (FIR) with Kafrul police station Wednesday against Tarique, his wife and his mother-in-law for concealment of information and acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.
Meanwhile, ACC secretary Mokhles ur Rahman said the arrests of Tarique's wife and his mother-in-law would depend on the investigation officer.
"Rest of the work will be done after the appointment of the IO. It depends on the gravity of the case…If the IO thinks in the interest of the investigation…" he said during the Commission's regular briefing when asked if Tarique's wife and mother-in-law would be arrested as they have also been accused.
Mokhles said the Commission has approved the submission of nine charge sheets in the cases against suspected corrupts like former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's parliamentary affairs adviser Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, and Awami League leader HBM Iqbal and his wife.
Asked when the charge sheets would be submitted, he said that after the formalities, charge sheets would be submitted soon. A reliable source said charge sheets would be submitted on Sunday.
Charge sheets will be submitted against former BNP MP Hafiz Ibrahim and his wife, former BNP MP Rashiduzzaman Millat and his wife, former CBA leader BM Bakir Hossain and his wife, former chief conservator of forest Anwarul Islam, former BNP MP Nasir Uddin Pintu and his wife, BNP ward commissioner Chowdhury Alam and six others, and former Jamaat MP Shahjahan Chowdhury.
The ACC secretary said the Commission has also approved filing of a non-submission case against former Prime Minister Khaleda's assignment officer Firoz Mahmud Iqbal for failing to submit the wealth statement in due time.
