The government has started the process of short-listing bidders before inviting tenders from them for constructing the 10-kilometre metro rail route in the city that is scheduled to be opened to commuters by 2019.

Officials said the pre-qualification bids for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) development project's package nos. 3 and 4 were invited on June 30 last.

The 10-kilometre metro rail route, just a half of the 20.1-kilometre MRT Line-6, will have nine stations from Uttara to Agargaon.

With the latest round, five prequalification bids out of eight components of the project, were invited, they added.

"We are still with the timeline of the procurement plan," said Project Director (PD) Mohammad Mofazzel Hossain.

He said the 20-kilometre MRT line-6 would be constructed under four packages. Of them, the contract package nos. 3 and 4 would cover half the line having a total of nine stations covering Uttara North, Uttara Central, Uttara South, Pallabi under package-3 and Mirpur 13, Mirpur 10, Kazipara, Shewrapara and Agargaon under the package-4.

According to the plan, the prequalification bid for the two other packages, 5th and 6th, under which seven other stations along with a viaduct will be built, will be invited in November next.

The PD said as the government had a target to open the rest of the MRT Line-6 by 2020, the project office had taken a few more months to avoid any management risks.

The government has drawn up a plan to construct the MRT line-6 with a total of 16 stations from Uttara to Motijheel with the target to open the line from Uttara to Agargaon by 2019 and the part from Agargaon to Motijheel by 2020.

On commissioning, the speedy train on the route will carry 60,000 passengers from one side to another every hour. The Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) development (DMRTD) Project, invited the prequalification bidding for the depot land development work on April 22 last. The time for the bidding has been extended to July 23 from July 8.

Sources said prequalification bidding for buying 24 sets of trains for the MRT was launched first out of the eight tenders. It has already been completed and the final selection is now set to get concurrence from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the US$ 2.7 billion project financier.

In the prequalification bidding called in January, eight companies-Hitachi-Mitsue consortium, Kawasaki-Mitsubishi consortium and Nippon Psych-SC JV of Japan, Norinco Group and Beijing Subway of China, Ansaldo STS of Italy, Alstom of France, and Bombardier of India were short-listed.

Tenders were also invited for installation of electrical and mechanical systems for the MRT line-6 on March 17. The closing date for it is July 13. Under this package, two big sub-stations and seven small stations will be constructed to ensure uninterrupted power supply for the metro rail service.
